How to put a character under my avatar?

I noticed when looking at threads here that on the side of some users' posts--under their avatar, stats, badges and everything--is a little pixel character from Disney or other things (fairies, princesses, angels, etc)

I can't figure out where the option is to add my favorite character under my username....Help? Thank you!

I get a page saying "Sorry, access denied" when I try to click on buddies. Is that an error or is there something I need before I can get a buddy? Can I not get one as a new arrival?

You have to level up to a higher group to access the buddies. Group meaning that you are a new arrival so you have to level up to certified pixie and so on. Leveling up means increasing your credit amount by responding to threads or visiting forum pages and doing other stuff like that to get credits. You can also make a friend who can purchase a buddy for you at any level you are and it will show even if you cannot access buddies.
